Starting Your Research

Overview

In this guide you will find resources to help you with your research. Use the tabs above to help you navigate.

Understand the assignment

  • What type of assignment is it? Research paper, personal essay, persuasive, opinion paper, or other?
  • How long does the paper need to be?
  • Do you need to use specific types of sources such as newspapers, magazines, scholarly journals or websites?
  • How many sources do you need?
  • Which citation style are you going to use for your bibliography? MLAAPAChicago or other?

Choose a topic

  • If given the option by your professor, think about a topic that might interest you, you know something

about, or you feel strongly about. Having a connection to or curiosity about your topic lightens the writing

and research process, especially for lengthy projects or papers.

  • Use your textbook, a class reading or class discussion as potential sources for topic selection. Chatting

with a professor for possible suggestions is also a great way to ensure your topic is appropriate for the

           assignment.
