What is OER?

A great working definition of OER can be found on the Hewlett Foundation website. This foundation has been instrumental in the development of today's OER movement. The Hewlett Foundation defines OER simply:

"Open Educational Resources are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and repurposing by other. OER include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming video, texts, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge."

The 5 R's of OER

There are five widely accepted notions about the culture of Open Educational Resources. These are:

  • Retain:  Make, own, and control your own copy of content
  • Reuse:  Use the content as-is
  • Revise:  Adapt, adjust, modify, improve, or alter the content
  • Remix:  Combine the original or revised content with other OER to create something new
  • Redistribute:  Share your copies of the original content, revisions or remixes with others.
